A tournament was held from the May 12, 2020 to June 2, 2020 episodes of IMPACT! to determine the new #1 contender for the IMPACT World Championship. Despite becoming #1 contender, Ace Austin was placed in five-way intergender match at Slammiversary against champion Tessa Blanchard, Eddie Edwards, Michael Elgin and Trey Miguel. Due to Blanchard being terminated from her contract with IMPACT Wresting, the match became a five-way for the vacant title between Ace Austin, Eddie Edwards, Trey Miguel, Rich Swann and Eric Young.
